Í þessufæs og í þáttu fæsstjáðu erðum viðí dag Sinti Ríkjavík Baltusson, the drummer, the musician, the author, the everythingwho is here to discuss a few different things with usa new album out Friday, a new album outa couple of albums out later this year or in the fall or this winterand on 40 years of bad taste recordsor Smeklisa, his labelWelcome to the show, SittryggurThank youNice to have you hereYou keep busy, it seemsYeah, I'm usually boredI sometimes put it that wayI've actually been doing a lot of work at Iceland Music for the last 14 years or soI used to run the export office but that moved into a new Iceland Music officeTwo years ago?First of January, 24YeahAnd I was hoping to beable to sort of take steps back during thatbecause I wasn't running the show anymoreI was just doingWait, what years were you running Iceland Music the last 10 years, did you say? From 2012 to 2014That's a good time to have run itThere's been a lot of success in that, in your tenureYeah, yeah, yeahOutstanding workWe've had a lot of good stuff happenand yeah, when I started there in 2013in 2012Yeah, yeah, yeahI just put one main focus onand that was to get an export fund goingYeahAnd I had to lobby that into the parliamentso I started an office here in Östastrætiand I used to invite parliamentarians over for teaOkayAnd some of them were old fans of meor Bokumil Font or Sjökarkjópsand my former bandsso they used to come overand have a tea or a coffeeand I would explain to themwhy we needed to have an export fundbecause we are on an islandand we can sort of jump into a carand drive to the next gigRightAnd Iceland is such a small populationthat if people are serious about their musicthey need to exportSo those were pretty goodI think you did an amazing jobI think you sold the countryI mean you areso you're famousAre you?More famous abroad than locally or both?Because I meanso your first great success is Sjökarkjóps?Yeah well yesInternationally yeahInternationallyInternationallyWe had anotherwell weI mean me, Einar and Björkthat ended up in the SjökarkjópsWe were together in another band before thatcalled Kökand that was our first sort ofband where we weresort of workinginternationallyintentionallyIn Kök you willIn KökYeahI mean you played Roskildeif I remember correctlyYeah we played a lot ofWestern European toursYeahFor people tracing that downthat's KUKLKUKLKUKLTwo albumsBoth fantastic by the wayYeah and I want to sayit's what 83 and 5or something like thatYeahCorrect83 to 86YeahAnd that band was ona small label in Englandcalled Korpus Kristiwhich was a derivativefrom Crash RecordsRightAnd Einar was living inLondon from82 or 383 probablyuntil86going to university thereand he made a lot of thesecontacts that ended upgetting the SjökarkjópsreleasedSo he was yourexport office at that timeAbsolutelyEinar was a one man export officeAbsolutelyBut then you took the knowledgeyou had from the Sjökarkjópsand from all yourexperienceand used it to helpIcelandic musicYesYou could say thatYeahSo Iwhen I came into the foldwell I was on the boardfor the export officefrom when it was formedin 2006at the end of 2006it started operationsin the beginning of year 2007a lady by the name ofAnna Hildurwas running itand she did a lot offantastic groundworkand sort ofthe funding partand getting the thing establishedSo when I took overin 2002we hadsort of an establishedfinancial groundto work frombut we still neededto create the export fundfor people to beable to applyfor travel grantsand suchWhat's your greatest successin your tenuredo you feel?Do you have a greatgreatest successthat you hadwhen you were runningthe export office?Aside from getting the fundup and running?Yeah yeahAside from just the existenceI would say that wasand I startedsomething calledRecord in Icelandwhich is aa refund programsimilar tothe film programbut italludes tomusic studiosin IcelandOh wowSo that was successfuland alsothe export fundgetting that upand goingI thinkmade the biggest differencethe biggest single differenceIt's an enormous change thoughYeah20 yearsbeforeobviously I was herebefore you started thereand before the office startedand then it came backand I'myou see quite an infrastructurebut every timeI'm at an event thereyou're therewe always have a conversationusually thank godyou're not wearing it nowbecause we're sitting inI think 300 degreesusually you're wearingthat beautiful tweed suitsyou're not wearing it nowand you're a hostto everybodyyou know everybodyfrom every kind of musicI've seen you talkwith hip hopI've seen you talkwith bluegrasswhich is a shamebecause you're a drummerand you thinkusually bluegrassdrummers don't talkbutYeah I meanthis is a small communityhere that we haveand we debatevigorously what the new tracksa lot of times we don't get that into printbut we do, it does help to have some ideawhat's going on. What I'm amazed by thisis howall this is making it better for the people after youbut it doesn't really help you as a musicianyou're an artist and you're always generouswith your time but you area huge iconinternationally, yes, but I thinkyour local presence is greaterright, I mean, Boga Milfant is something thatevery family will knowyou were like kind of a TV starI mean you used to watch your videos on TVyeah, you do theseshowsyou do these shows, also like you've donewe can almost call themit's almost like a travel show, right?yeah, but it's about musicLjómskólinn, no not Ljómskólinnthe other one you did, oh yesit's about strange names in natureyeah, Tintrún or somethingall sorts of stuffso for context, Iceland has a lot ofplace names that arealmost undecipherableyessome cases because they justdon't fit anything else or theymight be of obscure originor something, yeah, and you did aTV series about that and then there'swhich was excellent and then there's Ljómskólinnwhich isyou and I think Kitti, right?Kitti og Breiwe'll do thesekind of a series every now and then which runson the state broadcaster roof, yes, we dolike a seriesof six, aroundsix shows every two, threeyears, yeah, and it documentsit also works likea time capsuleit also documents thisa certain era of Icelandicmusic at the timeat any given timeand it pairs uppeople, wellpresumably from different generationsit doesn't always work like that butwe try to makegenerationalpairings of peopleto work together on a piece ofmusic for each given showgood example of this, because we covered itis Palland Benhamwho were paired up on that showof course, yesthey're sort of from the same generation thoughyeah, butbut they grew upblocks apart, so there's quite aseparationblocks apartno, but that'sa case in point of where thatended up beingeventually a whole recordthe best record of last yearyeah, they started out on thatshow, yeah, okso, yes, we do get up to thatmischief as wellbut that's alsobecause it's just notI'd like to point out that there's some depth in thesort of musical production of that becauseit requires a lot ofboth taste and thenpatienceto make these things work, I assumeyou just don'tyou have to conjure up the idea, of coursebut it's more than just conjuring up the ideait has to come togetheryeah, wellthere is an ideology behind the whole thingso every given showsay we have six shows in a serieswe start bysitting down and thinking about themesso every show hasa certain themeand it can beanything froma school like M-Hallto the army baseor more sort ofthings likemoney or religionor something like thatand so we try to talk about music thathas some place within theconceptand it also makes it easier to sort ofmake up thingsthat can fit into the conceptand it's sort of a creative thingin itselfand ithelpsthe whole processalongthat makes senseI meanyou can pick thesekind of cultural momentsoryou knowsome things thatkind of likeKepler gives a good point on the baseyou knowit's wheretraditionally we talk aboutwhere rock and roll came to Icelandyeahgives you a frameand it gives you aexactlythe army base waspartially like thatthat was one of our firstI'm justreferring to some of the first thingsthingsyeahwe didwe actually did one showwe was calledBerlinso we flew to Berlinand it was at ainteresting timewhen quite a few Icelandic artistswere living in Berlinand we didan interview withHildur Kunnartóttirthis is in2011it's 10 yearsbefore she winsthe Oscarand she was workingclosely at that timewith JohanJohanssonin Berlinandand then we spoketotheRetro Steffsonwho were living in Berlinat the timeand they just had arecord contractand were sort of tryingto make it in the big worldwhich is a very interesting timeto talk to a bandyesbecausethere's a lot ofa lot of stuffgoing on in their headand we couldrun with themand watch them play a showyou knowan outdoor showsomewhere in the middleof the streetand alltheir record labelwas just sending themall over the placeplaying all sorts of showsbut they were having fundoing itand,it was interestingand then theywe also spoke withyou knowlikeA.H.Sæbjörnssonyepwho still lives in Berlinbutyeah heI think hekind of runs an artistresidency or somethingout ofif I'm not mistakenout ofasmall townkind of east of BerlinokI thinkI might bethat could well be trueI might beconfusing thisbut yeahhehe's been theresinceI
