Umræðurit

This is RÚV English Radio with Darin Adam, daily English language radio from Iceland's national broadcaster, RÚV.RÚV English Radio with Darin AdamUnder the image of some shoppers at, I think that's Bónus in Kringlin, I'm pretty sure, looking at it there.Já, já.I know my bonuses. So let's go through this text from the start and then line by line. Take it away, Bjarni.Já, takk.Fyrirtækið hagar á búðirnar bónus og hagkaup.Hagar lækkar verð á næstum þúsund vörum.Verðið lækkar til áramóta.Verkaliðsfélög báðu fyrirtæki um að hagka ekki verð.Þess vegna lækkar hagar verð á mörgum vörum.Þessar vörur verða ódýrari.Matur í hyllum, matur úr fristi, matur úr kæli, drikkir, reynlætisvörur, snirtivörur.Þetta eru aðalega vörur frá júrósjóper,í bónus lækkar verð á 15 til 20 af hverjum hundrað vörum.Hagar lofar einu.Verðið á þessum vörum hækkar ekki aftur fyrir áramót.Ef það verður ódýrara fyrir haga að kaupa vörurnar,lækkar verðið kannski meira.Let's go back to the start and we'll go through this story as we always do, line by line.Já.Fyrir tækið hagar á búðirnar bónus og hagkaup. So the company now called Hagar, that means practically the field, you know, like grass.Okay.Yeah, grass field if you like. And that's, well, where you get the harvest from, meaning where you get the groceries from. You could understand it in that sense. It's the owner now of both bónus and hagkaup. And of course bónus coming from Latin meaning good, but in Icelandic it means something extra, something to benefit from. You could use the word bónus. And then hagkaup, one of the oldest still remaining chains in Iceland, means practically, so low cost buying or in favour of the budget. So the kaup is the buying, the purchasing bit.Yeah.Hag is something efficient, economical and so on, like we say in hagfræði, economy, etc.Okay.Yeah.So those are very linked to those companies because they are under the same hat of Hagar.Hagar lækkar verð á næstum þúsund vörum. So the company Hagar is going to cut down price on almost 1,000 types of groceries or items.Verðið lækkar til áramóta.And the price will go down until the end of the year.Verðkallisfjölög báðu fyrirtæki um að hagka ekki verð.So the worker unions, they asked companies not to raise the prices. And that's of course the underlying story here is that we are in, well, almost a crisis about the contracts. The overall contracts, salary contracts with the unions.Because they assumed, those agreements assumed that inflation would be a lot lower than it is just now.Exactly.So they have this stopper, if you like, that they could resign from the contract because of high inflation. So they are still trying to figure out ways to prevent it.And one of them is to ask the companies to step in, like now.Þess vegna lækkar Hagar verð.Þess vegna lækkar Hagar verð á mörgum vörum. And therefore Hagar is lowering price on many items.Þessar vörur verða ódýrari. So these merchandise or goods will be cheaper. And this is practically all, a little bit of everything you find in the store, but that's good for vocabulary.Matur í hittlum. So food on the shelves, then meaning dry food, like we would call it, that doesn't need cooling and so on.Matur úr fristi. So food in the freezers.Matur úr kæli.Food from the cooling department, yeah, or in the refrigerator and so on.And like those of us that know bonus, it's actually, you walk into the refrigerator, you could say, because they just have a cool, very cool room.Yes.All the hams and cheese.Hams and cheeses and eggs and things. All together in a giant fridge. In a giant fridge. So you don't have to open or lock any doors. You just walk in there yourself. It can be a bit cool sometimes, but it's practical in the same way.Driggir, drinks, hreinleitisvörur, cleaning products, and finally snirtivörur, cosmetics, and well, everything you need for your body. And cosmetics.Cleaning of the body and so on.Þetta eru aðalega vörur frá Euroshopper, Salling og Santa Maria. Those are mainly groceries from, and those are brands that are very well known in those companies,Euroshopper, Salling and Santa Maria.Í bónus lækkar verð á 15 til 20 af hverjum hundrað vörum. So to see the percentage, exactly. How big part they have in the total. They estimate that in bónus, so we will see lower price on 15 to 20 of every 100 items. So it's exactly 15 to 20% then.Hagar lofa einu. And the company Hagar promises one thing.Verðir á þessum vörum hækkar ekki aftur fyrir áramót.So the price on these groceries. Will not go up again before end of the year.Ef það verður ódýra rætt fyrir Haga að kaupa vörurnar lækkar verði kannski meira. And if it becomes cheaper for Hagar to buy the products, they will also lower it maybe a little bit more.So it could go down yet further. And Netto, the other, one of the other big supermarkets, also Kronun, have all done this.Exactly.In the last couple of days at the time that we're having this particular conversation.Maybe other shops will pile in as well. But they are moving at pretty much the same sort of time here.To keep those prices down until the new year at least. In the hope, in the hope that it brings down the rate of inflation. We shall see.Exactly.But a bit more money in our pockets, perhaps.Yes.Perhaps for a couple of weeks anyway.Bjarni, thanks very much indeed.More Ísguleith next week here on Rúð English Radio. My name is Darren Adam. You can get in touch with us anytime. We are English at RUV.is.Take care.
