house and started filming meum and uh so there was was there was that i also brought my chainsaw with meand uh started carving and there's a lot of driftwood and i've been there was carvingpresents for people and then this you know but then as i've also been held i've helped out in thethe uh the hot dog stand or i've helped you know clean out stuff and move stuff and you knowthere's always things to do yeah have we done a winter there i've done three winters three wintersyeah because i've only ever been there in the summer when of course the sunlight is constantbut i imagine on the 22nd of december when the sun basically doesn't rise at all it's a differentexperience but it does rise it's actually some of the most beautiful light you'll ever see inyour entire life because um at at around between you'll get light betweenwhat 10 a.m to 4 p.m and but it'll be this incredibly beautiful golden lightthat just is on the horizon and the clouds are blue black and it's you'll see it i mean i'vecaught a little bit of it in the film and it's absolutely some of the most beautiful light i'veever seen in my life are you spoiled for choice of a place like grimsey as a filmmaker um listenit's not it's not iceland in general there's no waterfalls and it's not all the sort of theclichés that everyone talks of you know like inspired by iceland it's pretty mucha flat you know it's a flat bit of land um the architecture is pretty ugly as everyone acceptsyou know there's nothing functional it's that's a very polite wordwell the church is beautiful as we've discussed the church is okayit's a bit gray and rusty now for my taste you know it's like if you go togo to husavik i think you'll find a very pretty church there yeah but umyou know but it's very it's pretty brutal um and i think the thing for me was actuallythat's why i concentrated on photography trying to make things look very beautiful becausei would when you're there you experience it but i think that it would be quite easy toyou know to go there's not much there you know a lot of people get on the ferry and they sort oflike they walk around and they get off and they get back on the ferry two hours laterand actually i would say go and spend a week there and you would not be disappointed no i think youcould go there for a week at any time of the year and you'd have a very different experiencedepending on the season and we'll see you next timea year every time a year would be great and get there in the next what 20 or 30 years before thearctic circle does drift so far north of the island that iceland is no longer an arctic nation it'sfive years it's got a bit longer than that i think hopefully but get there sooner rather than laternow be a parody stoke is where the film opens today but it's not just on today it's going torun for i think you said as long as there are tickets yeah yeah so it's going to run for thewhole month of october hopefully longer if people go see it and it's definitely a film i recommendthe cinema both because of the cinematography but also the music is beautiful it was recordedin api road we have musicians who work for bbc and philip glass so it's really a different experiencein the cinema and you know i encourage people to go and also support the beer parties becausewithout the parties we wouldn't be premiering the film in cinemas i don't think so it's a wonderfulcinema it's a great place to be and just a couple of sentences nikolai on why you think grimsey is ana island kingdom. Why is it an island nation?Basically, these are people that have chosento live apart from the main community, whether or not everyone has ADHD,or they are autistic, which I would personally say we all are.Yeah, we are as an island kingdom.and it's a very insular, independentstrong and tight communityand I think that it's a wonderful thingBecause returning to the mainlandnever mind feeling that you're in the big citywhen you get back to Åköneriyou feel like you're in the big citywhen you get back to Dáfinn, don't you?No, but the most amazing thingwas the first trip back actuallywas I got backI'd been three months on the first tripand I got backI got off the ferryand in front of me I saw doorwaysand I didn't know who was behind any of the doorwaysand then the road was turning to the leftand turning to the rightand I didn't know where the roads wentand then I saw that there were branches off the roadand the branches were goingfurther off into the mountainsand there were mountainsand you can't understandsuddenly your brain is goingoh my godit's a huge world out herewhereas when you're living thereyou're just used to the top roadand the bottom roadand then there's the road that goes to the other side of the mountainthe other side of the islandbecause when I was on the island lastI made the mistake of talking about the roadand I was corrected by someone who saidactually there are two roadsand nobody wears seatbeltsoh whoopsthank you both very much for your time todaywhen is the film open?tonightat 7 o'clockand I want to encourage people to go see itbecause you don't have to go on a 3 hour boat rideyou can just go to B&Band see what's going onwell I would steer peoplewho are in any way uncomfortableon boats away from the boat ridebut I'd recommend the flight certainlyhowever you get thereGrimse is worth attendingas indeed it's Be Your Paradise tonightand for as long as the film runsdetails on the pageaccompanying the show from Rúf English Radiothank you both very much indeedthank you very muchthis is Rúf English Episode 945 - EYRÍKI, GRÍMSEY

þri. 6. okt. 2026, 16:00 · 15:58

Today on RÚV English Radio, the documentary film on and about the island of Grímsey. Nikolai Galitzine's new film Eyríki (https://bioparadis.is/mynd/981_eyr-ki/) is a love letter to his sometime-home

Samantekt

1. Í þessum þætti Rúf English Radio er rætt um Grimsey, lítinn eyju í Norður-Atlantshafi, og upplifanir af því að dvelja þar yfir veturinn. Gestirnir deila minningum um skartgripum náttúrunnar frá litlu eyjunni og hvernig ljósin á dimmum veturdögum eru einstök.
