Rúf.Rúf English Radio with Darin Adam, daily English language radio from Iceland, Rúf.They have even lived in them, spent a lot of time in them, talked with people that worked in them or lived in them and then incorporated them, if you can say, into their own artistic practice.Tell me about these photographs.A woman who is in different rooms in different buildings, who is she and where is she in these?Yeah, these are works by Elina Braterus, a well-known Finnish photographerthat has done many series of these self-portraits in buildingsand an extensive series also of self-portraits in alto buildings. And this one exactly is done in alto's own house that he and Aino designed for themselves. So here she is playing with, you know, also the memory of the people that lived here. This, for example, is Elisa's room. And here the piano, there you can see a picture of his first wife, Aino Alto, on the piano. And here you have the architect's tailcoat in his bedroom.Because in each of these she looks, well, she is alone. She looks quite...She looks quite lonely, actually, in these images.I think she is always taking like a fictive character somehow, but I think to be doing this in the architect's own house, and this is called in the architect's house, is a bit special compared to the other series. What makes an alto building, do you think? What are the characteristics?Yeah, what you always talk about is this humanistic architectureand this usage of...form and human-friendly materialsand that you always feel, you know, welcome when you enter a buildingthat the proportions are also very human. So that's also why it's interesting to go even deeper and see, like we have done through these works, how...The design is obviously modernist, and these are modernist buildings from the middle of the 20th century. But wood is very important. We're not talking about...You see these machines for living here, are we?No, no, exactly.Wood is a very typical material and also a warm material. But speaking of modernist buildings here, we can take a look at...Yes....one of the works. It's a video work by Daphna Maimon called Líki Týts.And here you can see two parallel stories unfold. You can see the woman named June that is living in this modernist building, and then at the same time, another story, takes place in her wisdom tooth. In her wisdom tooth?Where a group of prehistoric humans are living.Right, because at the moment what we're looking at is the interior of a carthat's going through an urban motorway tunnel somewhere. But the action is going to shift then to what's happening inside her wisdom tooth.Yeah, exactly. So this is also a play with different perspectives and this embodied knowledge.Embodied knowledge.Embodied knowledge that the bodies carry. The exhibition starts...The 3rd of October, we have an opening at 6 o'clock here in the Nordic Houseand everybody is very welcome to that. And as we said at the start of the conversation, just being in the Nordic House, you're in one of his incredible works of art, aren't you?Yes, absolutely. And we also wanted to take the opportunity to work with this housebecause here we are featuring the architect's house. We also have...Laimio Sanatorium in Ilona Saga's work. Then we have Villa Maison Louis Carré outside Paris in this work. And then we also feature the smallest private house designed by Alvar Aalto in Finland,Villa Skeppet, in Dafna's other work. But then we will also offer a performance made by Dafna here the 8th of October. We will have three different time slots for performances that you need to register. We will also offer a performance made by Dafna here the 8th of October. We will also offer a performance made by Dafna here the 8th of October.Where she is working with this exact buildingbecause it felt important to us to also embrace it from that perspective. So you're the curator of this exhibition, but of course you're also the director of the Nordic House itself. So let's take a quick look ahead to what else we can expectin the next sort of months here at the Nordic House. The first thing to say, I suppose, is that there's an exciting new restaurant,a bistro, coming to replace the café upstairs.Yes, we are very excited about the restaurant Luit. It's opening in the next few weeks. We still haven't found the exact date for this to happen, but very soon, probably. And is this going to be another vegetarian outlet?I know the café was, wasn't it, or a vegan outlet? No, so this will not be vegetarian, but it will be very organic and near-grown food as long as possible. And some of the nicest views in the city centrebecause we are right in the centre of the city next to the university, very close to the domestic airport, but also there's a bird sanctuary, isn't there, outside. There are wonderful views hereand you'll be able to enjoy them in the evening.Yes, absolutely, because this restaurant will be open as a bistro during daytime, but more as a fine dining restaurant in the evening, some days a week.So yes, we are very much looking forward to that. What else can we expect?Yes, we have, of course, as normally a literature programme. For example, tomorrow we are hosting a discussion with Swedish, author Alex Schulmann. That's Wednesday. And then we also have a children's exhibition in the children's libraryrelating to this topic. It will be called Bodies and Buildingsand actually it's about this book, Kurjenkarta, that is explaining Altau architecture and design for children. So they will also have a chance to dig in to that through this,an exhibition about this children's book.During the dance festival, we will host a seminar, regarding accessibility and inclusion in the culture sector in the Nordics. That's in November. An exciting programme coming up then.Yeah, yeah, absolutely.Fantastic.Well, great to see you again.Best of luck with that exhibition.A link to that on the page accompanying the show from Rúf Englis Radio.I shall certainly be back to sample the new restaurant.I think lots of people will.Yeah, yeah, good. You're all very welcome.Yes, and of course, the Nordic House is a place that you can simply come and enjoyright here in the centre of Reykjavík.Not my house. It's my last visit here, I'm sure.Sabina, thanks very much.Thank you.Thank you for coming. This is Rúf Englis Radio. My name is Darren Adam and you can get in touch any
