This is Rúf English Radio with Darin Adam, daily English language radio from Iceland's national broadcaster, Rúf.Hello, this is Rúf English Radio. My name is Darin Adam. Thanks very much for your company today. It is time for another episode of Það er skilíðið, the news in a simple form of Icelandic and Bjarni joins me once again.Hi Bjarni.Hi, god dag.Today we turn to supplements. A story of the kind of supplement, you see these in all the supermarkets.Yes, yes, more and more. You buy these everywhere. The sort of supplement you might take if you were planning a workout, a pre-workout supplement. There are concerns about who's taking them and the kind of damage they must be doing. So we're going to go through this story from the start and then line by line and you'll find a link to the text.We shall start just under the image of some of those pre-workout and workout supplements. Koffín-eitrun getur verið mjög hættuleg.Jóhanna Eirún Torfadóttir vinnur hjá landlegni.Jóhanna er verkefnastjóri næringar.Jóhanna segir, koffín-eitrun getur verið lífshættuleg.Jóhanna segir, það er mjög mikilvægt að passa að börn fái ekki svona mikið koffín.Öylusingar fyrir prí-vörkátt eru oft fyrir ungt íþróttafólk.Jóhanna segir, íþróttafólk þarf að sofa vel til að ná árangri.Fólk sevur ekki vel ef það notar vörur með miklu koffínu.Mikið koffín er þess að það er mikið koffín.Mikið koffín er þess að það er mikið koffín.Mikið koffín er þess að það er mikið koffín.Mikið koffín er slemmt fyrir líkama barna.Á pakkanum stendur að fólk eigi að drekka þetta fyrir æfingu.Jóhanna segir, það er mikið álag fyrir líkama barna að fá mikið koffín.Jóhanna segir, það er enn hættulegra að fá mikið koffín á stuttum tíma.Það eru lög um sölu á drikkum með miklu koffínu.Það þarf sérstakleifi til að selja drikki með mjög miklu koffínu.Samt eru svona vörur seldar á Íslandi.Það á að merkja vörur með miklu koffínu sérstaklega.Það er ekki alltaf gert.Heilbriðis eftirlitt sveitarfélaga á að fylgjast með þessu.Jóhanna segir, þessar vörur eru ekki fyrir börn.Jóhanna segir, það er bannað að selja börnum þessar vörur.Ok, let's go back to the start and go through this line by line.Já.Fæðu bótar efni heitir pre-workout.So a supplement or food supplement, if we check out this fairly long word there in the very beginning.Fæða is nutrition, something to eat.Bót is supplement, something that you add to something.Or make it even better.Improvement.Yeah, exactly. And efni is substance. So it's exactly, it's a food supplement. And it's called, the label of it is pre-workout.Það er selgt í matvöruverslunum og hilsubúðum.It is sold in grocery shops and health stores. It is strange because you can get so many of them in supermarkets.Exactly.There are things that you can't get in supermarkets.Yeah.You can't go to a pharmacy for contact lens fluid, for example.Yes, exactly. You can't buy that other than a chemist.Yes, yes.But you can get this stuff, which is causing problems as we're about to hear.Yeah, and well, it's a different matter. But of course, as famous is about alcohol, also in Iceland, that that should be in the Monopoly stores, even though it's now all over the internet also. And also painkillers, by the way.Oh, painkillers. If you're coming to Iceland, you need a paracetamol, you've got to go to a chemist. You can't buy them in supermarkets.Exactly, not in the local store.Yeah.But this. You can find it there.Yes, yes.Öylusingar segja, efnið er gott fyrir heilsuna. So the adverts meant, or the commercials say, this substance is good for your health. And öylusingarnar segja líka, fólk getur aft lengur með efnunu. And the ads also say, people can train longer with this substance.Það er mjög mikið af koffið.Það er mjög mikið af koffið með efnunu. There is a heavy load of caffeine in the substance. And interestingly, like sometimes happen, we took the word caffeine, you could say almost directly into Icelandic,we just used it with the O like in coffee.Okay.So we just say it koffiðn with the O sound, but it's just imported word, totally. So it's not coffee, it's caffeine.Yes, yeah.So we call it koffiðn.We are meaning the caffeine, the active ingredient, you could say.Yes.Not coffee itself, that is koffið.So it's like a mix of A, O has happened there, you could say.And that's maybe the big case in all this, that this substance is full of caffeine in a heavy amountand that is the primal drive, you could say, that you should get out of taking this.Yes.Yeah.And then the problem starts.Eitt skamtur getur haft 330 milligram af koffiðni.So one dose can have like 330 milligrams of caffeine. Now, I used to be addicted to energy drinks.Okay.So I can tell you exactly how much that is.Very good.330 milligrams is slightly more than four cans of Red Bull. You see, exactly.Which is 320.Yes.And I assume exactly that so many don't see that in the context of this substance.Maybe mixing it, I imagine maybe it's in powder or you mix it and you don't read it as such, you know, and you just, you don't know how much you're taking in at the same time.Yeah.So 330 milligram, exactly. Here we see the neuter form because of hundruð.So it's 330 milligrams. So it's 330 milligrams, 330 milligram af koffiðni.Úlingar hafa notað pre-workout og orði veikir. And here comes yet another point in all this. This has such different effect on depending on your age and the status of your body, you could say.So young people, úlingar, they have been using this and they have simply gotten ill.Úlingarnir þurftu að fara til læknis.Úlingarnir þurftu að fara til læknis.Úlingarnir þurftu að fara til læknis. The youngsters needed to go and see a doctor.Úlingarnir fengu koffin eitrun. So they had like a coffin overdose, you could say.Eitrun could mean also intoxication or yeah, that you get, it can be harmful.Poisoning?Sorry?Poisoning.Poisoning, yeah.Yeah, it can be, yeah, because eitra is to poison.Okay.So then the eitrun is the noun. From the verb.So they really got, yeah, you could say, koffin poisoning.Yes.Koffin eitrun er þegar fólk fær of mikill koffin. And the koffin, the koffin poisoning is when you get too much koffin.Þá getur fólk fundi fyrir. Then people can sense in their body.Að hjartalslæð skringilega. That your heart beats weirdly.Meaning normally just too fast.Or maybe irregularities and so on.Hauðsverk, headache, svima, vertigo, ógleði, nausea or even kvíða, anxiety. So this, of course, all this combined together is a very bad situation.Fólk sevur líka ylla and people also sleep badly.Because like we all know, many of us use koffin exactly.Because we need to stay alert. But exactly, if the doses gets too high, you get too much of it.And you can't even sleep when you want to.And you get the shakes. At least the shakes.Exactly.Yeah, yeah.Landlæknir hefur fengið fréttir af þessu. So the chief, what have you called the chief doctor again? This would be the chief medical officer.Exactly.Something like that.We called it the doctor of the country. The country, like we say.Yes, the national doctor. The national doctor. He has had news about this. He's aware of this problem.Koffin eitur getur verið mjög hættuleg. So koffin poisoning can be very dangerous.Jóhanna Eirún Torfadóttir vinnur hjá landlækni. And Mrs. Jóhanna Eirún Torfadóttir, she works at the chief doctor.Jóhanna er verkefnastjóður.Verkefnastjóður næringar. And she is like the head of nutrition. We use this term verkefnastjóður.It means literally you could say task managerbecause she is in charge of different tasks in a certain field. So it's very often used like in the public sectorwhen you are the head of something and it's under your ruleor under your supervision. And she is then in charge of nutrition.Næring.Jóhanna segir, she says,Koffin eitur getur verið lífsættuleg.Koffin poisoning can be life-threatening.Jóhanna segir, það er mjög mikilvægt að passa að börn fá ekki svona mikið koffin. And she says it's very important to take care or to regulatethat children do not inhale or get so much caffeine.Öylusingar fyrir pre-workout eru oft fyrir ungt íþrótafólk.But the advertisement from this pre-workout are often aimed to young athletes. So therefore, maybe they are still there in growing and young bodythat they can't cope or react to all this caffeine.Jóhanna segir, íþrótafólk þarf að svofa vel til að ná árangur. And she says, athletes need to sleep well to get some results. So here we have like a contradiction in a sense we could say.If you're tuning yourself up too much, you can't get the necessary sleep.Fólk séfur ekki vel eftir að nótar vörur með miklu koffinu.People do not sleep well if they use produce with lots of caffeine.Yes.Because, of course, this is just one example. We know we can exactly in energy drinks, just in Coca-Cola if you like, you know, and Pepsi and so on.And in coffee, of course, you can get lots of caffeine.Depends on how much you drink of it.Mikið koffin er slæmt fyrir líka maður barna.A lot of caffeine is bad for the body of children.Á pakkanum stendur að fólk eiga að drekka þetta fyrir æfingu. And in the packaging it says that you should drink, like this, before you practice.Jóhanna segir það er mikið álag fyrir líka maður barna að fá mikið koffin. And she says it's a lot of, well, strain or pressure for the young body of childrento inhale or get too much caffeine.Jóhanna segir, and she says also, það er enn hættulegra að fá mikið koffin á stuttum tíma.It's even more dangerous to get a lot of caffeine in a short period of time. And of course if you just mix this, like they tell you how much of this in water or I don't know, and you just drink that very rapidly before you exercise, that can end in all those problems.Það eru lög um sölu á drikkum miklu koffinni. So we have a law on the saying,of drinks with a lot of caffeine.Það þarf sérstakleifi til að selja drikki með mjög miklu koffinni. And you need a special permission to sell drinks with a heavy load of caffeine. But not coffee or tea, we're talking about the energy drinks.Yes, because I think, well, I don't have the statistics of course here, but I think maybe in the average consumption of coffee and tea, you're within some limits. But within...With the heavy load of caffeine per millilitr or centilitr and so on,in the energy drinks, those are banned up to 18, some of them, and so on.It's definitely easier to, what would be the verb, chug, I suppose,to drink quickly a can of energy drink than it is to brew a cup of coffee.Exactly, and so many things of the taste and of course being ice cold normallyand so many factors.Speaking as a former addict.Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.Without any doubt at all.Yeah.My car used to be just full of empty cans of energy drinks. And like they say, samt eru svona vörur seldar á Íslandi. So nevertheless, even though we have this law and all, we have those items in sales.Yes.So there's something more needed here.Það á að merkja vörur með miklu koffinni sérstaklega. So brands or items with a lot of...A lot of caffeine should be labeled specially.Það er ekki alltaf gert, but that is not always done. And there may be, yeah, the last point, who should regulate all that?Helbreyðis eftirlitt sveitarfélaga á að fylgjast með þessu. So the sanitary surveillance of the municipalities, they should regulate thisand...But sadly they have a lot of other things to do.That's maybe between the lines. We can understand that. But they should regulate this and those warnings, etc.Jóhanna segir, she says,Þessar vörur eru ekki fyrir börn.Those items or those products are not for children.Jóhanna segir, það er bannað að selja börnum þessar vörur. And she also says it's illegal to sell those items to...To children. But of course we have to ask the question, who bought it originally? Is it maybe just available at the home?Yes.Because somebody else with a correct age is using it and so on and so forth.Yeah, it's a tricky one.And these drinks are very popular among young people.Absolutely.Because they taste nice and sweet and fruity and all the rest of it.And of course they're marketed as well.Or some of them are marketed to them, as we've said, to those who are going to the gym or whatever.Yes.It's difficult.Yeah.Anyway, sleep well.Yes.Bjarni, thanks very much indeed.Takk fyrir. The text, of course, that we've just read, you can follow along with that. It's on the page accompanying the show from
